After hearing her roommate cry through the wall about a forgotten birthday, Towa decides she has to do something before morning.
JLPT N4 stories are longer and bring in te-form, casual speech, conditionals, and chained verbs. The narratives start adding slight twists — family, hobbies, work, and school told with more nuance.
夜の十一時ごろ、トワは部屋で勉強していました。すると、隣の部屋からルームメイトの泣き声が聞こえてきました。壁越しに声が聞こえています。「誕生日、忘れられた…」そう言っているようでした。トワは胸が痛くなりました。
Around eleven at night, Towa was studying in her room. Then, the sound of her roommate crying came from the next room. The voice was audible through the wall. It sounded like she was saying, 'They forgot my birthday.' Towa's chest ached.
「明日は彼女の誕生日なんだ。」トワは気づきました。「何かしてあげなくちゃ。」でも、何を買えばいいか、すぐには思いつきませんでした。しばらく考えて、小さなケーキとカードを用意しようと決めました。
'Tomorrow is her birthday,' Towa realized. 'I've gotta do something for her.' But she couldn't immediately think of what to buy. After thinking for a while, she decided to prepare a small cake and a card.
コンビニは少し遠いです。「起こしてしまうかもしれない。」トワは心配しました。でも、朝早く出れば大丈夫かもしれません。目覚ましを六時にセットしておきました。それから、カードに書く言葉も考えておきました。
The convenience store is a little far. 'I might wake her up,' Towa worried. But if she left early in the morning, it might be okay. She set her alarm to six o'clock in advance. Then she also thought ahead about what to write in the card.
翌朝、目覚ましが鳴りました。トワはそっと起き上がり、音を立てないようにして着替えました。ドアをゆっくり開けて廊下に出ました。ルームメイトを起こさないようにしながら、静かに部屋を出ました。
The next morning, the alarm went off. Towa quietly got up and got dressed without making a sound. She slowly opened the door and stepped into the hallway. She left the room quietly, making sure not to wake her roommate.
外はまだ薄暗くて、空気が冷たかったです。トワは急いでコンビニに向かいました。店に着くと、小さなショートケーキを一つ選びました。レジで会計をしてから、急いで寮に戻ってきました。
Outside it was still dim, and the air was cold. Towa hurried toward the convenience store. When she arrived at the store, she chose one small shortcake. After paying at the register, she hurried back to the dormitory.
部屋に戻ると、ルームメイトはまだ寝ていました。トワはホッとしました。台所のテーブルにケーキを置いて、手書きのカードも隣に置きました。カードにはこう書きました。「誕生日おめでとう。あなたがいてくれてよかった。」
When she returned to the room, her roommate was still sleeping. Towa felt relieved. She placed the cake on the kitchen table and set the handwritten card beside it. On the card she wrote: 'Happy birthday. I'm so glad you're here.'
少しして、ルームメイトが台所に来ました。テーブルの上を見て、目を大きく開けました。それからトワの方を向いて、何も言わないでぎゅっと抱きしめてきました。トワは少し照れながら、そっと抱き返しました。
A little while later, the roommate came into the kitchen. She looked at the table and opened her eyes wide. Then she turned toward Towa and, without saying anything, hugged her tight. Towa, a little embarrassed, quietly hugged her back.
