夜明けの空に、いくつもの島が霧の中に浮かんでいます。最も低い島は、はるか下の雲海に半分沈んでいます。その霧の中から、一艘の郵便船がゆっくりと上昇してきました。
In the dawn sky, several islands float within the mist. The lowest island is half-submerged in the sea of clouds far below. From within that mist, a single postal vessel slowly rose upward.
船の舵を握っているのは、リオという若い郵便配達人です。彼女の後ろには、各島向けの荷物が丁寧に積み重ねられています。ラベルには行き先の島の名前が書かれていました。
Gripping the helm of the vessel is Rio, a young postal courier. Behind her, parcels intended for each island are stacked carefully. The labels had the names of the destination islands written on them.
今日は群島全体への配達日です。日没前にすべての荷物を届け切らなければ、夜間の気流規制で全ての船が着陸を強いられます。リオは計画的に、上の島から順番に回るつもりでした。
Today is the delivery day for the entire archipelago. If she cannot finish delivering all the parcels before sunset, nighttime airflow regulations will force every vessel to land. Rio planned methodically to visit the islands in order from the highest.
しかし、第二島と第三島の間に差し掛かったとき、突然、熱壁が現れました。強い上昇気流が壁のように立ちはだかり、いつもの航路を完全に塞いでいます。リオは思わず舵を引き戻しました。
However, when she reached the area between the second and third islands, a thermal wall suddenly appeared. A strong updraft stood like a wall, completely blocking her usual corridor. Rio instinctively pulled the helm back.
「この熱壁、今日中に消えそうにない。」リオはそう呟きました。計画していたルートを通すことは、もはや不可能です。別のアプローチを考え直す必要がありました。
"This thermal wall doesn't look like it will disappear today." Rio muttered. Continuing through her planned route was no longer possible. She needed to rethink and find a different approach.
リオは荷物の積み方を組み直すことにしました。熱壁を避けるためには、下の気流帯を通る必要があります。しかし、それぞれのルートの傾斜角度に合わせて、荷物の重心を変えなければなりません。
Rio decided to reorganize the way the cargo was loaded. To avoid the thermal wall, she needed to pass through the lower airflow bands. However, she would have to shift the center of gravity of the parcels to match the angle of each new route.
まず、第三島向けの重い荷物を船首側に移しました。代わりに、第四島向けの軽い小包を後部に固定し直します。手際よく作業を進めながら、リオは次のルートを頭の中で描き込んでいました。
First, she moved the heavy parcels intended for the third island to the bow side. Instead, she re-secured the light packages intended for the fourth island to the rear. Working efficiently, Rio was mapping out the next route inside her head.
積み替えを終えると、リオはすぐに舵を切りました。船は下の気流帯へと滑り込み、熱壁の下をくぐり抜けるように進んでいきます。風が強く、船体が揺れましたが、リオは舵をしっかりと握り通しました。
Once she finished repacking, Rio immediately turned the helm. The vessel slid into the lower airflow band, advancing as if slipping under the thermal wall. The wind was strong and the hull shook, but Rio gripped the helm firmly all the way through.
第三島の船着き場に着くと、島の人たちが待ち構えていました。リオは素早く荷物を渡し、受領のサインをもらいます。「いつもより早い到着ね。」と住民の一人が言いました。リオは笑顔で頷き、すぐに次の島へ向かいました。
When she arrived at the third island's dock, the island's residents were waiting. Rio quickly handed over the parcels and received their signatures. "You arrived earlier than usual," one of the residents said. Rio nodded with a smile and immediately headed for the next island.
次の島へのルートも、熱壁の影響を受けていました。リオは再び荷物を積み替え、今度は船の左舷を少し下げる向きに調整しました。この角度は、横風の強い下層気流帯向きの姿勢です。
The route to the next island was also affected by the thermal wall. Rio repacked the cargo again, this time adjusting so the vessel tilted slightly to port. This angle is a posture suited for the lower airflow band where crosswinds are strong.
午後になると、太陽が傾き始めました。残りの島はまだ三つあります。リオは焦りを感じながらも、一つ一つの作業を丁寧にこなし合いながら進んでいきました。
In the afternoon, the sun began to tilt. Three islands still remained. While feeling a sense of urgency, Rio continued, carefully working through each task in turn.
第五島は、普段は上から降りる形でアプローチします。しかし今日は、下から螺旋状に上昇する代わりに、島の東側の崖下に沿って回り込む方法を選びました。この迂回ルートは時間がかかりますが、安全です。
The fifth island is normally approached by descending from above. However, today, instead of ascending in a spiral from below, she chose a method of circling around along the base of the cliffs on the island's east side. This detour route takes more time, but it is safe.
最後の島に到着したとき、空はすでにオレンジ色に染まっていました。リオは最後の荷物を手渡し、受領書を受け取りました。島の老人が「今日は大変だったろう」と声をかけてきました。
When she arrived at the last island, the sky was already dyed orange. Rio handed over the last parcel and received the receipt. An elderly islander called out to her, "Today must have been tough."
「熱壁が出ましたが、なんとか通し切りました。」リオはそう答えました。老人は満足そうに頷きました。リオは船に戻り、帰港の準備を始めました。日没まで、まだわずかに時間があります。
"A thermal wall appeared, but I managed to push through to the end." Rio answered. The elderly man nodded with a satisfied look. Rio returned to her vessel and began preparing for the return to port. There was still a little time before sunset.
帰港する間、リオは今日の飛行を振り返りました。熱壁が現れたとき、パニックにならずに荷物を積み替えて対応できた。それは経験的な判断というより、その場で考え抜いた結果でした。
On the way back to port, Rio looked back on today's flight. When the thermal wall appeared, she was able to respond without panicking by repacking the cargo. That was less a matter of experience and more the result of thinking it through on the spot.
港に戻ると、リオはすぐに紙と鉛筆を取り出しました。今日通った迂回ルートを、記憶が新鮮なうちに書き込んでいきます。熱壁が再び現れたときのための、代替ルート図です。
When she returned to port, Rio immediately took out paper and a pencil. She drew in the detour routes she had taken today while her memory was still fresh. It was an alternate route chart for when a thermal wall appeared again.
線を引き、島の名前を書き込み、気流の向きを矢印で示しました。それは今日一日の飛行を凝縮した、実用的な一枚の地図でした。リオは出来上がった図を確認し、満足そうに息を吐きました。
She drew lines, wrote the names of the islands, and indicated the direction of the airflows with arrows. It was a single practical map that condensed an entire day of flying. Rio checked the finished chart and let out a satisfied breath.
リオはその地図を、舵のそばのクリップに挟みました。次に熱壁が来ても、今日と同じように対応できます。地図は風にわずかに揺れながら、舵の横に静かにとどまっていました。
Rio clipped the chart to the clip beside the helm. The next time a thermal wall came, she could respond the same way as today. The chart swayed slightly in the breeze and stayed quietly beside the helm.
