An American explores Japan's ubiquitous vending machines and their cultural insights.
JLPT N4 stories are longer and bring in te-form, casual speech, conditionals, and chained verbs. The narratives start adding slight twists — family, hobbies, work, and school told with more nuance.
アメリカから来たリサは、日本に着いたばかりでした。ホテルから駅まで歩いている時、たくさんの自動販売機を見ました。「えっ、こんなにあるの？」とリサは驚きました。
Lisa, who came from America, had just arrived in Japan. While walking from the hotel to the station, she saw many vending machines. “Eh? There are this many?” Lisa was surprised.
日本には自動販売機が約500万台あるそうです。23人に1台だけあることになります。アメリカとかヨーロッパとか、他の国では見られない数でした。「どうしてこんなに多いんだろう」とリサは思いました。
It is said that there are about five million vending machines in Japan. That means there is one for every twenty-three people. It was a number that couldn’t be seen in countries like America or Europe. “I wonder why there are so many,” Lisa thought.
自動販売機では、いろいろな物を買うことができました。コーヒーとかジュースとか、温かい飲み物も冷たい飲み物も同じ機械で売っていました。「温かいのと冷たいのが一緒？すごい！」
At vending machines, you could buy many kinds of things. Coffee, juice, and both hot and cold drinks were sold from the same machine. “Hot ones and cold ones together? Amazing!”
飲み物だけではありませんでした。卵でも傘でも、お米でも買える自動販売機がありました。変わった物を売っている機械もたくさんありました。リサは写真を撮りました。
It wasn’t only drinks. There were vending machines where you could buy even eggs, umbrellas, and rice. There were also many machines selling unusual things. Lisa took photos.
ある日、友達のユキに聞きました。「どうして日本には自動販売機が多いの？」ユキは説明してくれました。「まず、日本は安全だから、外に機械を置くことができるんだよ。」
One day, she asked her friend Yuki. “Why are there so many vending machines in Japan?” Yuki explained. “First, because Japan is safe, machines can be placed outside.”
「それに、日本人は忙しい人が多いし、便利さを大切にする文化なんだ。店が閉まっている時でも、コンビニが遠い時でも、自動販売機があれば飲み物を買うことができるでしょう？」とユキは言いました。
“Also, there are many busy people in Japan, and it’s a culture that values convenience. Even when shops are closed, or when convenience stores are far away, if there’s a vending machine, you can buy a drink, right?” Yuki said.
リサは他の国のことを考えました。「アメリカの場合は、外に機械を置いたら、壊されるかもしれない。」日本では、自動販売機が壊されることはあまりないようでした。
Lisa thought about other countries. “In the case of America, if you put a machine outside, it might get broken.” In Japan, it seemed that vending machines were rarely broken.
自動販売機は日本の文化の一部になっていました。駅でも、学校でも、山の中でも、どこにでもありました。困った時、いつでも飲み物を買うことができました。
Vending machines had become a part of Japanese culture. At stations, at schools, even in the mountains, they were everywhere. When in trouble, you could buy a drink anytime.
リサは自動販売機が好きになりました。夜遅くまで勉強している時、温かいコーヒーを買いに行きました。暑い日には、冷たいお茶を買うことができました。「本当に便利だな」と思いました。
Lisa came to like vending machines. When she was studying until late at night, she went to buy a hot coffee. On hot days, she could buy a cold tea. “It’s really convenient,” she thought.
日本の自動販売機は、ただの機械ではありませんでした。安全な社会と、便利な生活と、日本人の生活スタイルを表していました。小さい機械が、大きい文化を見せてくれました。
Japanese vending machines were not just machines. They represented a safe society, a convenient life, and the lifestyle of Japanese people. The small machines showed a big culture.
